What's up welcome back to Mrs. Toon$ Soul Sunday's!  

Todays artist is 21st Century "Remember the Rain" & "Child".  Marvin Smith was the writer and producer of "Remember The Rain" and "Child".  These records are over 30 years old. 24 track analog was the standard then. Those songs were recorded at the Sound Factory West and Wally Heider in Hollywood. Wah-Wah Watson, James Gadson, Henry Davis, George Bohannon, Jack Ashford, Eddie "Bongo" Brown and Sonny Burke were among the many musicians who played on those records back then. Mark Davis, also produced some of those tracks. In retrospect, I still think they were "Ahead Of Our Time" album (1975) had better songs on it then the subsequent album on Motown "Break Thru." The former was a labor of love...the latter about satisfying a contract. After raising a family, finishing his legal studies and just enjoying life Marvin Smith created an online record company, Dangerous Minds Entertainment Group - Worldwide (dangerousmindsonline.com ) they are developing several new acts, and surprisingly a few recently booted from major labels have expressed interest.  They are also working on a 21st reunion Album.  I'm including footage of this Seasons American Idols auditions of a young gentleman by the name of David Leather Jr.  When he chose "Remember the Rain" as his song I was so excited to see that the younger generation is continuing to keep this music alive.  He sings this song to the "T" it gives me chills.  Not sure if he is still a contestant but hopefully he is and continues to choose soul music in his acts.

Welcome back To Soul Sundays with Mrs. Toons, Today's selection is in memory of "America's oldest Teenager" Dick Clark. He passed away earlier this week April 18 at the age of 82, due to a massive Heart Attack after a surgery. The world has lost another legend. He showed us how to dance & what music to listen to. He also gave us something to do on New Year's Eve. For generations Dick Clark was more than just a TV host, he was the person who helped shape key memories in our lives. In judging Clark's accomplishments, some might use his giant television empire as the benchmark. He made millions of dollars as a television entrepreneur, showing far more business savvy than you'd expect from someone with a slightly derisive nickname, "America's oldest living teenager." Game shows, award shows, bloopers, the American Music Awards -- hours of television were filled by Dick Clark productions. For most Americans, their memories of Clark are personal. He came to them in their living room with "American Bandstand," counting down the hits, introducing the latest dance moves and hair styles, and chatting up the pop act of the hour who would stop by lip-synch their new songs. Or they would join him on New Year's Eve, a friendly face for the dateless, or those who just wanted to stay away from the crowd. His other television institution, "New Year's Rockin' Eve," is still going strong at age 40. Lady Gaga was the last star of Clark's last New Year's show this winter bringing in 2012. "American Bandstand" was a simple idea blessed with perfect timing. Television was new in the early 1950s, and a Philadelphia station began showing a version of a teen dance party in the afternoon. Clark, a DJ in the city, took over as host in 1956. It soon went national. One of the country's biggest generations, the post-World War II baby boom, was heading into their teen years, itching to dance to this new sound of rock `n' roll. Clark spun the hits, as the camera panned to kids trying out the freshest dance moves. It was a required stop for the day's hitmakers, and exposure on "American Bandstand" could send a song soaring up the charts. He'd ask an audience member to listen to a couple of brand-new songs each week and rate their hit potential, launching the immortal phrase: "It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it." The show moved to Saturday afternoons in 1963, and continued to wield great influence. Chubby Checker's "Twist" dance craze owed much to the teens shown gyrating on "Bandstand." The music changed, but "Bandstand" kept an open mind. MTV eventually killed "Bandstand"; people didn't need a once-a-week appointment to see people dance to songs on TV when they could watch music videos at any hour. The show's influence didn't disappear, MTV's "Total Request Live," big in the boy band era, was simply "Bandstand" for another generation (with a much shorter shelf life). Clark suffered a stroke back in 2004. Even after a severe stroke it affected Clark's ability to speak clearly and Seacrest joined him as co-host, Clark still made it a point to show up every year at Times Square, tenderly kissing his wife to celebrate another year. The show never remained frozen in time, either. Clark always brought on the hottest stars. It's a holiday tradition that will live on without him, but forever defined by him. Just like he would say at the end of every show. For now Dick Clark, Soooo Long.

 What's up welcome to Soul Sundays! Today's Artist is Mr. Brenton Wood with my favorites "I'm the one who knows", "I want love" & "Best thing I ever had".... When Brenton Wood was a child, his family moved west to San Pedro in Los Angeles, Ca. He attended San Pedro High School just like my Husband Mister Cartoon. Brenton Wood attended pedro High for part of his freshman year before moving to Compton. Where Brenton Wood became a member of the Compton High School track team and received several awards for his athletic achievements. Following his high school graduation, Wood enrolled in East Los Angeles College. Soon after, he took the stage name Brenton Wood, possibly inspired by the wealthy Los Angeles enclave of Brentwood (some sources state that the name is in honor of his "home county"). During this period, his musical interests began to manifest themselves. He was inspired by Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke, and he began cultivating his songwriting skills, also becoming a competent pianist. Early singles for Brent Records and Wand Records failed to chart. After signing with Double Shot Records, Wood had a hit with "The Oogum Boogum Song" in the spring of 1967. It reached #19 on the US Billboard R&B chart and #34 on the Billboard Hot 100 listing. In Southern California, "The Oogum Boogum Song" hit the top 10 on both KHJ in Los Angeles and on KGB-FM in San Diego. His biggest hit came in September of the same year, as "Gimme Little Sign" hit #9 on the pop chart and #19 on the R&B charts. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. In addition, it peaked at #8 in the UK Singles Chart. In the song, "Gimme Little Sign" is not sung, instead the chorus repeats "Give Me Some Kind of Sign". In late 1967, Brenton wood charted a third single, "Baby You Got It", reaching #34 on the Hot 100. Wood continued to perform, even recording a duet with Shirley Goodman. He reached the charts again in 1977, when "Come Softly to Me" registered in the lower reaches of the listings. Following its release, Wood became part of the oldies soul circuit. In 2001, he returned with an album of new material, This Love Is for Real. Among his later appearances was a 2006 appearance on the Los Angeles public access program Thee Mr. Duran Show, where Wood and his band performed several of his hit singles. Sadly but True all the great hits that Brenton Wood sings, he does not own the rights to any of his songs. They are all owned by Los Angeles MC promoter & disc jockey, Art Laboe from Hot Jamz 92.3. Brenton Wood is a very Down to Earth humbled man who still continuously performs at local car shows & venues for the people. If you grew up & live in Los Angeles you have to at least know one of his songs. If not purchase his 18 best hits album, Cd or go to ITunes. Your missing out! Also check out this crazy old footage of Brenton Wood performing for Top of the Pops show intoduced by Jimmy Savile & Dave Cash, back in 1968. He was killin' since way back than. Many Props to him. What's up welcome to Soul Sundays! Today's selection is in memory of the very talented Marvin Gaye... Last week April 1st was his B-day. When we think of Marvin Gaye we think of probably his most popular hits like "Let's Get it on", " Distant Lover" "Sexual Healing"&"I heard it through the grapevine"... Marvin Gaye had a very difficult life that involved drugs, divorce, hardship & murder.  Today's selections are from his album "Here my Dear" "When did you stop loving me,When did I stop loving you"

1962, Marvin Gaye at the age of 22 wed 17 yr old Anna Ruby Gordy,  the sister of Motown Record Corporation founder Berry Gordy, Jr.  By the time Anna filed for divorce thirteen years later, the couple had been separated for over two years, and each had accused the other of infidelities. (Marvin's infidelity was hardly a matter of debate, as he was living with a teenage girl who was 17 & who was pregnant with his child.  The son Marvin and Anna Gaye had claimed as their own was actually a child Marvin Gaye had fathered by his wife's fifteen-year-old niece. The divorce proceedings dragged out over two years as Marvin continually failed to show up for court dates, refused to pay court-ordered support for Anna and their son, and claimed his expenses exceeded his income even as he continued to spend money recklessly, purchasing luxury automobiles, boats, and beachfront properties.  If that's not already complicated & a huge mess. By the time Marvin's day of financial reckoning arrived, he had little cash and was well in for a large amount of back taxes, so his attorney worked out a settlement under which Anna would be paid off from the royalties earned by Gaye's next album. That next album turned out to be "Here, My Dear" a harrowing "concept album of divorce" which chronicled the turmoil of Anna and Marvin's relationship. The record's symbolism was hardly subtle: The inner sleeve depicted a Monopoly-like board game emblazoned with the word JUDGMENT, across which a male hand passed a record to a female hand. On the man's side of the board were only a piano and some recording equipment, while the female's side of the board included money, a house, a Mercedes, and a diamond ring.  Doesn't this sound familiar to most divorces today?   I'm sure he wished he would've signed a pre-nup.  It is true that Gaye initially considered giving the album less than his best effort, but his lack of motivation was primarily due to the knowledge that he wouldn't be receiving any money from the record, not a conscious intent to cheat his ex-wife. In any case, Gaye soon found that he was incapable of recording with anything less than a complete commitment to his art, and if he had any intent to "get" his ex-wife, it was through the album's lyrics, not its sales:  Although the album was not a commercial success, it was admired in many quarters for its artistic qualities.  So Marvin Gaye (who was by then officially bankrupt) was obligated to begin making monthly payments to Anna to cover the shortfall. However, if that wasn't enough Drama for poor Marvin Gaye he was killed april 2nd in 1984 by his own father a day before his b-day over an arguement & trying to defend his mother.  The deceased Marvin Gaye still owed Anna the additional $293,000 that was owed to her, and monies earned by his estate since his death have gone to paying off the IRS rather than benefiting his ex-wives and children, thereby proving the maxim about life's only two certainties.  So much for revenge.  Marvin Gaye's music will continue to live on. I'm sure a lot of Babies we're made his music.  Hopefully, his soul is at peace now.  Thanks, for Tooning In!

Hey what's up! Welcome to Soul Sunday's! Today's Artist is "Ruby Andrews" she sings
a couple of my favorites like "Just loving You", "The love I need" , "Hey boy take a
chance on love" & "Cassanova, your playing days are over"

Ruby Andrews’ tuneful late-’60s sides established her as a seductive Windy City soul
singer. Andrews debuted on the Zodiac label in 1967 and scored her biggest seller,
“Casanova Your Playing Days Are Over" that same year. Successful follow-ups on
Zodiac included "You Made a Believer Out of Me" in 1969 and "Everybody Saw You the
next year". Andrews later cut some bluesy material for Ichiban, with the outrageous
Swamp Dogg producing.In 2004, Grapevine Records released a retrospective, entitled
'Just Loving You'.

Ruby Andrews is also the CEO of Genuine Ruby Records LLC.  

I found this crazy footage of people dancing in Peterborough to one of "Ruby
Andrews" songs "Just Loving you", one of my favorites.  I love to see people
